“What should my 2 year old be doing?”

Wondering what milestones your two year old should be hitting? Let’s dive in!

The 2-Year Milestones: By the time your child reaches 2 years of age, their world is expanding faster than ever, and so are their communication skills. At this point, your kiddo might have around 50 (milestone e.g. 90% of 2 year olds have approximately 50 words)-300 words (average e.g. 50% of children who are 2 years old have approximately 300 words) up their sleeve!

Putting Two Words Together: When your little one turns two, we want to look for their ability to start to string two-word phrases together. Some examples are…"more juice," "big ball," and "bye-bye doggy!”

When Progress Takes Its Time: Now, let's address something important. While every child develops at their own pace, sometimes a little extra support can go a long way. If your child isn't quite hitting the 50-word milestone or isn't yet creating two-word combos, it’s okay! The thing about children is we don’t have a way of knowing what children will catch up and who won’t. That’s why early intervention is the best thing you can do for your child’s speech and language development. We highly discourage the wait and see method (please don’t do this!)

Why Consult a Pediatric SLP: At SG Speech Therapy, we provide complimentary 15 minute speech and language consultations. Here you can discuss your concerns and a therapist will discuss if a speech and language evaluation is recommended. Please keep in mind that an evaluation does not always mean they need therapy.
