how to help your child start talking

Parents play a critical role in helping their child talk, and there are many simple things that they can do to support their child's development.

Here are some tips for parents to help their child to start using more language:

  1. Start early: Children's language development starts from a young age, and it is never too early to start talking to your child. Talk to them about what you are doing, describe objects and surroundings, and sing songs and nursery rhymes to encourage language development.

  2. Imitate your child's sounds: When your child makes a sound, imitate it back to them. This helps to build their confidence and encourages them to keep trying to communicate.

  3. Wait…Give them time to respond: When asking questions or making statements, give your child plenty of time to respond. Avoid rushing them or finishing their sentences, and allow them the time they need to communicate their thoughts and feelings.

  4. Encourage play and be silly!: Play is an important part of children's language development, and it provides an opportunity for children to practice their speech and language skills in a fun and engaging way. Encourage your child to play with toys and engage in activities that encourage language and social interaction.

  5. Read together: Reading together is a great way to build your child's language skills and encourage a love of reading. Choose books that are appropriate for your child's age and interests, and take turns pointing to the words and talking about the illustrations.

  6. Repeat, repeat, repeat: Children need to hear words and phrases repeated many times in order to learn them. So, when your child uses a new word or phrase, repeat it back to them, and encourage them to use it in their own speech.

  7. Be patient: Children develop at their own pace, and it is important to be patient and not to compare your child to others. If you have concerns about your child's speech and language development, speak to a speech therapist for advice and support.
